Questi composti a catena lunga danno origine alla struttura cellulare, che determina la presenza di numerose sacche d\u2019aria. L\u2019aria intrappolata \u00e8 responsabile delle buone propriet\u00e0 di isolamento termico.<br \/>Il monomero stirene \u00e8 anche una sostanza aromatica presente nelle noci, nel caff\u00e8, nelle fragole e in molti altri alimenti. Il gas viene attivato dal vapore acqueo e si volatilizza completamente nel giro di poche settimane: con gli attuali metodi di misurazione non \u00e8 possibile rilevare alcuna emissione gassosa o fenomeno simile. Il materiale isolante si scioglie, ma non brucia spontaneamente. Inoltre, grazie all\u2019intonaco, il materiale isolante rimane protetto a lungo, anche in presenza di temperature elevate e fiamme.<br \/>Per il Neopor si \u00e8 sempre utilizzato un ritardante di fiamma polimerico e non pericoloso. Le catene polimeriche possono essere scomposte mediante un processo semplice, consentendo cos\u00ec di produrre nuovo polistirolo.<br \/>La biodegradazione avviene, tra l\u2019altro, grazie ai vermi della farina, che consumano il polistirolo senza lasciare residui.
